Martjin Rep, 41, Amsterdam
Why this question is important to Martijn:
This question is important to me because of humanity’s grave problems (extreme poverty, wars, human rights violations, limitations in supply of food, energy and water, etc.) and the very real threats to the world ecosystem. I suspect that dealing with these problems effectively requires some form of world government. This government should, of course, have justice as its foundation. Otherwise the problems mentioned will not be solved. The question of how to achieve just government (free of corruption, focused on service, with moral authority) is, I believe, a question that has always been important in religious communities, holy writings and traditions. The Parliament of World Religions is therefore in a position of opportunity and responsibility to urgently address this question.
Two aspects of my background have stimulated me to ask this question: First, I am a biologist (assistant professor in molecular plant pathology) which makes me look at problems in a scientific way, central to which is asking critical questions. Second, I am attached to the Baha’i-faith, which motivates me to contribute both practically and intellectually to the achievement of world peace and an “ever advancing civilization”.
__________
Martijn’s question is one of thousands of questions gathered during a dropping knowledge question campaign. The power of these questions is evident. These questions demonstrate just how thoughtful the public can be if asked to name what it believes is important.
