Do Depictions Of A Violent God In Religious Books Give People And Governments The Moral Justification To Hurt Each Other?

Week2_Depiction of Violent GodPhil Brownbill, 31, Bath, UK

Why this question is important to Phil:

I believe that our understanding of God and what we teach about God completely shapes the world we live in. There must be a reason why religion has failed over the last 2000 years to create peace on earth. I believe the main reason for this failure has to do with a misunderstanding about God and the characteristics God has. I think for our world to get closer to accomplishing peace, harmony and happiness, religions need to admit that perhaps they do not know everything about God and that they need to revitalize their belief systems, not replace them but enhance them. Religion is another name for what we believe, and our beliefs create our behaviours and thereby the state of today’s world.

Phil’s question is one of thousands of questions gathered during a dropping knowledge question campaign. The power of these questions is evident. These questions demonstrate just how thoughtful the public can be if asked to name what it believes is important.
