After the Table of Free Voices on September 10, 2006, the organization divided into two independent groups. The Berlin-based team became Mindpirates e.V. and the US-based team became Dropping Knowledge International. Today, Mindpirates e.V. remains solely responsible for the coordination of the 2006 Table of Free Voices and the original dropping knowledge.org website. Dropping Knowledge International works to advance the tools and thinking of Dropping Knowledge to advance the practice of engagement and inclusion throughout the world.
At Dropping Knowledge International (DKI), we work to bring the diverse voices of the
public, especially those traditionally underrepresented, into the public sphere. We aim to foster the capacity of people at the margins of society to shape dialogue and action at a prominent level – through question campaigns and using social media as a tool, both to invite people into the process of identifying their questions, and to reflect back to them their own thinking about these questions and what action is needed to address them.
DKI understands that the voices, needs, and visions of key segments of the global public are consistently underrepresented in public and political debates that shape the priorities and future of the world. Through our principal of designing for the margins, we proactively work to include and engage these segments of the world’s populations and their leadership to join in creating and sharing knowledge and action.
To invite and engage in dialogue about questions opens us to new knowledge about the world. When people start asking questions they care about, they also start sharing what they know about themselves, their cultures, and their environments. When people share their knowledge, they may find similar experiences or common solutions, just as they may also realize that there is not necessarily just one story but multiple stories to be understood and negotiated.
The work of DKI is putting the capacity for inquiry, understanding and innovation into the hands of the global public. DKI is a growing resource of actionable and empowering knowledge built in the public’s trust. The purpose of DKI is to fuel the hope for democracy by empowering the diverse global community to raise questions, exchange knowledge, ideas and dialogue around issues, and organize for action.
With greater knowledge exchanged and action generated by the global public, we aim to change the terms of political debate and civic engagement in the world.
